Fighting the Algorithm: How We’re Surviving Social Media Suppression at BlackOpsToys

If you’ve ever felt like your favorite creators just vanished from your feed, you’re not alone—and neither are we. At BlackOpsToys, we’ve been fighting the algorithm gremlins on Instagram and Facebook for years. And no, it’s not because we’re posting anything shady. We’re posting what we’ve always posted: collectible 1/6 scale action figures and parts. But lately, that content has been flagged, limited, or even blocked altogether. Why? Because some of our figures happen to be holding tiny replicas of weapons.

That’s right. We’re not selling real weapons. We’re not promoting violence. We’re showcasing military action figures for collectors. But automated systems—AI moderation bots—can’t tell the difference. So we’ve been hit with content violations, shadowbanning, and a whole lot of frustration. And we know we’re not the only ones.

When the Bots Don’t Get the Hobby

We’ve received notices that our posts “violate community guidelines related to the sale of regulated goods.” Sounds serious, right? Except all we did was post a photo of a toy soldier holding a plastic rifle. The moderation bots see “gun,” they flag it. No context. No nuance. Just a blanket restriction that cuts our visibility and reach in half—or worse.

Now imagine running a business that relies on social media to reach people who love what you do, and suddenly, no one sees your posts. That’s the reality we’re facing. It’s made it harder to connect with our community and even harder to reach new collectors who’d love what we create if they could just see it.

Community Support: Our Not-So-Secret Weapon

We’re not giving up—and we’re definitely not going quiet. One of the best ways to fight back is with you. Your likes, comments, shares, and saves tell the algorithm, “Hey, this content matters.” When you tag friends, leave comments, or hit that little paper airplane and share our posts, it helps us show up in more feeds. We can work together fighting the algorithm.

We’ve started reminding our followers to turn on post notifications, too. It’s a small thing that makes a huge difference. That way, even if the algorithm tries to bury our content, you’ll still see it the moment we post. We’re asking for help—but we’re also building a community that looks out for one another.

Email: Our Reliable Backup Plan

Let’s be real. Social media is unpredictable. That’s why we’ve doubled down on our email newsletter. It’s direct. It’s personal. And best of all, it can’t be filtered out by some misfiring AI bot.

We use our newsletter to share everything from product drops and behind-the-scenes updates to blog posts like this one. If you’re not on it yet, now’s the time. We promise we don’t spam—we just keep it real, the same way we always have.

Trying New Platforms (With Mixed Results)

We’re also branching out to platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter). TikTok gives us a chance to reach a younger crowd, but even there, we’ve run into the same moderation issues. X is more news-driven, and it’s harder to find our collector niche in that space—but we’re showing up anyway. Why? Because we have to. This business is our passion and our livelihood, and we’re willing to experiment until we find what works.

We’re Still Building, Even in the Dark

Here’s the part we’re most excited about: even while fighting all these visibility battles, we’re cooking up some of our best projects yet. We’re talking brand new gear kits, exclusive collaborations, and full figures that are already in the pipeline for 2025. We can’t wait to share them with you—and we will, whether it’s through email, livestream, or maybe just passing a USB stick around the neighborhood (kidding… kind of).

Final Thoughts: We’re Not Going Anywhere

If you’ve made it this far, thank you. Thank you for being part of a community that refuses to be silenced by a few false flags. Thank you for sticking with us, supporting us, and fighting the algorithm alongside us.

We’ll keep posting. We’ll keep building. And we’ll keep finding creative ways to do what we love—and to help you do the same. Because BlackOpsToys isn’t just a store. It’s a movement. It’s a DIY army of collectors, customizers, and kitbashers. And we’re just getting started.
